Javaplein

The Javaplein project functions as a catalyst for its direct environment, De Indische Buurt in Amsterdam. The project distinguishes two varied programmes, a private housing programme and a public library, both situated in their own rectangle mass. The two main masses are connected by a ‘bridge’ which thereby transforms the two individual building into one single building. The bridge also houses public programmes such as an auditorium and an art gallery. It serves not only as an extension of the public library but can also be considered as an urban element which encloses the public square. In order to preserve the existing urban character of the neighbourhood, the exterior of the design had to be appropriate. Therefore, the outer façades, which are facing the surrounding buildings, are made of brick. The facades facing the public square are opposed to the character of its surroundings. This creates a unique ex-perience for a central meeting place for the Indische Buurt. This deviation gives a public appearance to the building masses and makes the public function highly noticeable.
